“These are the golems I was used to seeing in my lifetime,” Sela said, and indicated the four seated figures that looked like overly large human statues of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. “These will stay inactive unless the structure of this building is under threat or the owner of them commands otherwise…”

Rocky looked at the statues and then at Sela skeptically. “You’re sure they aren’t just going to get up and try to stomp us?”

Sela made a face and added a shrug that made it clear she wasn’t sure in the slightest. Rocky summoned his shadow clone and immediately was reminded why he hadn’t been using it as often. His shadow self-appeared with its arms crossed and shaking its head. “Dude, they might not even wake up. Just get close enough and see, please?”

<Azoth think shadow Rocky is coward…> his pet said from right beside him, and Rocky couldn’t help but chuckle as he absently patted the manticore’s leg.

Begging yourself to do something was not a fun experience—especially when the second you couldn’t truly say no, and Rocky felt his mouth twist into a sneer. In the end, he forced it to his will. Still, before it moved, the clone pointed questioningly at the blue revolving portal that sat in the doorway between the four behemoth golem statues.

“I already explained it to Rocky. It is an instanced dungeon, meaning we could be entering the depth of this rock or an entirely different planet. There is no way of knowing which before we enter.”

The clone shook its head more emphatically.

“I think it’s saying it can’t enter that portal,” Zippo suggested and Rocky watched his mirror image indicate the kid and clap dramatically. “No need to be a dick about it…” Zippo mumbled at the overly dramatized response.

“I didn’t tell you to enter the doorway,” Rocky scolded the clone. “And insulting people isn’t going to change the facts. Now get over there and stand between the four golems. That’s an order!” The final bit made the clone walk forward even though it clearly didn’t want to.

It waved its hands in protest as its feet continued to carry it ever closer. Rocky watched with held breath as his twitching and dancing puppet reached the feet of the golems. They didn’t come to life, and he breathed out audibly and unsummoned the clone that was now giving him the dual birds. “Well, I don’t think we have any other choice but to enter the temple. Especially if we have any hopes of getting out of this barrier.”

Victoria led the way to the blue shimmering portal, and everyone else followed at a safe distance. Even though his clone had just tested the golems, there was always a chance that the clone wasn’t considered a target by whatever was controlling the statues. Rocky Analyzed one of them again.
